Saturday, January 29th, 2022 -- 8:32 AM

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Total milk production in Wisconsin rose during December when compared to the same time last year, the tenth straight month of consecutive increases.

According to the USDA's latest milk production report, Wisconsin farmers produced 2.65 billion pounds during the month, up 1.8 percent from last December, and higher than the 2.55 billion made in December 2021, which had more days on the calendar. Nationally, 18 billion pounds of milk was produced in the 24 major dairy states for the month. That was down fractionally from 2020, but higher than the previous month's 17.3 billion. Meanwhile, the number of milk cows on farms in the 24 major states was 8.88 million head, 42,000 head less than December 2020, and 8,000 head less than November 2021.

The average number of milk cows on Wisconsin farms for the month was 1.28 million head, about 1,000 below last month, but 16,000 more than last year. Monthly production per cow averaged 2,080 pounds, which was 10 pounds per cow more than last year's figures.
