Bipartisan Support for Former Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson

Thursday, January 27th, 2022 -- 9:01 AM

(Bob Hague, WRN) Bipartisan love for Tommy Thompson on the floor of the state Senate on Tuesday, where lawmakers approved a resolution thanking the former governor for his service as acting UW System President.

Senators, including Democrat Jon Erpenbach, also praised Thompson’s time as governor. “You made Wisconsin better. You worked with Democrats, and you worked with Republicans. You worked with anybody who wanted to move the state forward.”

Senator Van Wanggaard said, “He has continued to make Wisconsin a great place to live, that’s one of his famous phrases. And I know he’s not going away cause we’re not going to let him.”

Milwaukee Democrat Lena Taylor said, “Whenever there has been an issue for Wisconsin, you’ve been willing to roll up your sleeves and be a part of the solution. Thank you for that. Thank you for your leadership.”

Senator Jerry Petrowski said, “I’ve known you for a long time since I got here. And the one thing that I really would like you to remember – God bless you Tommy, and thank you.”

Thompson, who served four terms as governor, will step aside from his role with the UW in March. Milwaukee attorney Jay Rothman has been picked as the new UW System President.
