Wisconsin Department of Health Services Restarting its Call to Get Children Vaccinated

Friday, January 21st, 2022 -- 10:01 AM

(Raymond Neupert, WRN) The Department of Health Services is restarting its calls to get children vaccinated against COVID-19. Dr. Jasmine Zapata says that while children may not get as seriously ill from the disease, they are still feeling its effects.

"In addition to the acute illness that COVID-19 can cause there are also long COVID symptoms that our children can experience." Dr. Zapata says it's a matter of their safety, as well as the safety of those around them.

"The COVID-19 vaccine for children ages five and up is the most effective way to keep kids healthy, safe and in school. Since the end of August 2021, children in Wisconsin have made up more than one in five new confirmed cases of COVID 19."

Dr. Zapata says new research is showing that kids are more at risk of catching chronic illnesses after contracting COVID. "From a chronic disease prevention standpoint, it’s very, very important that we keep our kids safe and healthy."

The vaccine for children ages 5 to 11 is available and is free. Zapata says it's the best method of keeping kids healthy and in school.
