Ninth Tornado Confirmed During Historic December Storms

Monday, January 17th, 2022 -- 12:00 PM

A 9th tornado was confirmed by the National Weather Service from historic storms that occurred on December 15th.

This tornado happened in Chippewa County. It started in the Town of Lafayette and traveled east along Lake Wissota before ending in the Town of Anson. The tornado was classified as an EF0.

Other tornadoes that occurred that day included an EF1 that started near Homer Minnesota and ended on an island in the Mississippi River in Trempealeau County. Another occurred west of Greenwood and one south of Osseo.

Another occurred in the Village of Trempealeau along with one in east rural Eau Claire County. A very damaging tornado occurred in the City of Stanley and two were confirmed near Neillsville.

Wisconsin’s nine tornadoes and Minnesota’s 20 were part of at least 94 total tornadoes reported in the serial derecho, which spanned from the Central Plains to central Wisconsin.

The Nation Weather Service office said that 40 tornadoes occurred in Wisconsin in 2021. That’s the most since 2010, when the state had 46 confirmed tornadoes.

The nine December tornadoes are also the most for that month since reliable tornado tracking in the state began in 1950; prior to 2021, only six December tornadoes in the state had been confirmed.
