(Raymond Neupert, WRN) Before you sign up for a pricey gym membership to suit your New Years' resolutions, make sure you know what you're getting into.

State consumer protection director Michael Domke says you should always ask for a tour of the facility and even a free trial if they have one, before you sign a contract. "You want to make sure you're paying for what you expect to get and make sure you don't overpay for a bunch of services you may not need."

Domke says it's important to take a tour of a gym before you sign up for a long term contract. "Then if you decide you like the gym and you want to sign that contract, just make sure you understand the terms and conditions. In Wisconsin, there is a limit that it can't be any longer than two years."

Domke says you need to read the fine print on any contract before you sign it, and make sure you aren't being signed up for extra services. If you do run into a problem, you can contact DATCP at (800) 422-7128.
