AREA LAWMAKER REMOVED FROM WITNESS LIST

Monday, February 27th, 2006 -- 12:28 PM

An area state lawmaker is apparently off the hook in the Capitol corruption trial of a former Assembly Speaker. Scott Jensen?s trial resumed Monday in Dane County Court.

Rep. Scott Suder (R-Abbotsford) was originally listed as a possible prosecution witness in the trial, but Dane County District Attorney Brian Blanchard last week cut out a number of key state Republican figures, including: Suder, Reps. Garey Bies, Don Friske, Dan Meyer, Phil Montgomery, Mark Pettis and Jeff Stone.

Current Assembly Speaker John Gard was retained as a witness by Blanchard.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports the case will air a lot of ?dirty laundry? that could impact future political races.

Recently introduced information has linked the campaign managers of all three candidates for governor to allegations of campaigning on state time.

Five former employees of the Assembly Republican Caucus testified in court last week that they worked on Assembly Republican campaigns exclusively in the months before the 1996, '98 and 2000 elections.
