DOYLE CANCELS QUESTIONED CONTRACT

Tuesday, January 31st, 2006 -- 8:37 AM

By Bob Hague, WRN

Governor Jim Doyle cancels a controversial state contract, and orders a review of the process whereby contracts are awarded.

Doyle claims he's personally unaware of any improprieties, and the travel contract appears to have gone to the lowest bidder, but he's pulling the plug on the deal. A federal indictment issued last week accuses Department of Administration official Georgia Thompson of illegally steering the contract to Doyle campaign donor, Adelman Travel.

In addition to cancelling the contract, Doyle has appointed Mark Bugher, Tommy Thompson's Secretary of the Department of Administration, to conduct a review of the state's contracting process, and is directing all state agencies to not include political appointees on panels making contract decisions.

Doyle reportedly will not return some $10,000 dollars in campaign donations from Adelman Travel.
