(Wisconsin Ag Connection) The Wisconsin Pork Association is joining swine producers from across the nation during October to celebrate National Pork Month.

According to the Wisconsin Ag Connection, October was selected as the pork month because this is the time of the year when the most hogs are traditionally marketed.

The state's pork industry represents a significant value-added activity in the agricultural economy and a major contributor to the overall Wisconsin economy.

USDA figures show hog marketings in the Badger State totals nearly $100 million and helps contribute to about 10,000 jobs, either directly or indirectly. Throughout the month, Wisconsin pork producers will showcase their products to consumers across the state.

The check-off says consumers can be confident that the pork they eat was raised using these ethical principles. The USDA says pork is the world's most widely eaten meat, representing about a third of all meat consumed.
