New figures released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture shows that winter wheat production in Wisconsin is estimated at 18.4 million bushels this year, up 113 percent from 2020.

The agency's Small Grains Summary indicated that 290,000 acres of the crop was planted this year. That's also up 81 percent from last year. Winter wheat harvested area, at 245,000 acres, is nearly double compared to the previous season. Yields are estimated to be around 75 bushels per acre. Oat production in the Badger State is forecast at 3.78 million bushels, down 54 percent from last year's harvest. Area seeded to oats totaled 175,000 acres, and harvested area was at 61,000 acres.

Farmers are expected to yield 62 bushels per acre, which would be just a bushel less than last year. And barley production is estimated at 371,000 bushels, down 38 percent from 2020. Planted area, at 15,000 acres, is also lower by 42 percent. Yields are projected to be 53 bushels per acre, up 7.0 bushels per acre from the last growing season. (Wisconsin Ag Connection)
