SOME TOWN OF SEIF RESIDENTS WANT OUT OF GREENWOOD SCHOOL DISTRICT

Tuesday, January 10th, 2006 -- 11:42 AM

The Neillsville School Board listened last night, as the public voiced their opinions on a couple issues concerning the district?s future. Billed as a ?public forum?, dozens of area residents attended the meeting.

The board first took comments on a ?petition for attachment? from the Town of Seif. It was explained most of the Town is in the Neillsville school district, but a small portion of the Town is in the Greenwood district. Residents of that section have gathered the needed signatures to petition to leave Greenwood and attach to Neillsville.

Seif resident Bob Sibiliski said there are nine students and around $3-million of property in the sections.

?The electives are no where near (what?s offered) in the Neillsville School District,? Sibiliski said of the Greenwood school system. ?They don?t want to consolidate, they want to remain Greenwood.?

Two parents of Town of Seif children voiced support for the attachment. They said Greenwood?s budget cuts had led to the district offering just ?core classes? and few electives.

Also voicing support for the attachment was Dan Coughlin. The Town of Hendren resident spearheaded a similar effort for his Town, which was denied by both Greenwood and Neillsville school boards at a joint meeting in July. He reiterated his position that Neillsville?s board had a ?better chance of winning the lottery? than consolidating with Greenwood. He claimed the Greenwood board is feigning interest in consolidation to appease voters. He encouraged Neillsville to get innovative to lure students away from Greenwood -- and other districts -- as they wouldn?t act unless ?driven to nothingness?.

Both boards will likely vote on the petition next month, but it is unlikely the Greenwood board would vote to allow detachment.
