The day after Thanksgiving is no longer considered the busiest shopping day of the year, but it?s right up there. Retailers around the country offer special sales and open their doors early to accommodate those eager to start Christmas shopping.Pamida in Neillsville opened its doors at 6 a.m. Friday morning. It seems every year has a new ?hot? item. Remember Beanie Babies and Tickle Me Elmo? This year, store manager Bill Zark says there are a few items that have moved especially well.
"The digital world has really taken off. We have a 7" portable DVD player, a classic stereo," Zark says. "Bratz Dolls. Care Bears are coming back again."
People seem to procrastinate a bit more nowadays, but Zark says this is still one of the busiest days of the year.
"Today is usually about the largest day. Christmas Eve is a huge day. If we were open longer hours, it would overtake this day," Zark says.
While shoppers seemed to be calm here in Neillsville, things got out of hand at a Wal-Mart store in Orlando, Fla., where a man who allegedly cut in line to get a discounted laptop computer was wrestled to the ground.
Last year, the Thanksgiving weekend rush accounted for only 9.2 percent of holiday sales. The busiest week was from Dec. 12 through Dec. 18, which garnered 22.5 percent of holiday sales.
