More Winter Weather Delays Farmers in Wisconsin's Fields

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Snow and cold conditions brought more setbacks for farmers who were not able to get their crops off the fields prior to last week.According to the latest crop/weather report from the Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service, the corn and soybean harvests were interrupted by a large, slow moving winter storm system on Thursday and Friday. Parts of northern Wisconsin received up to six inches of snow, with more arriving later in the weekend. Topsoil moisture levels were rated one percent very short, seven percent short, 76 percent adequate and 16 percent surplus. As of Sunday, about 40 percent of the corn for grain was run through the combines. That's three percent better than last year and five days ahead of the five-year average. The moisture content was reported at 21 percent.
Soybean growers estimate their harvest progress at 85 percent complete, more than four weeks ahead of the same time in 2019 and 13 days further along than normal. Most of the winter wheat crop has been seeded with 71 percent emerged. And the cranberry harvest was wrapping up in central Wisconsin. Fall tillage was reported as 42 percent complete, more than a month better than last year and 10 days ahead of the average.
