Cold, Windy and Rainy Conditions Delayed Field Work in the State

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Cold and windy conditions, along with spotty rains interrupted fieldwork in some areas of the Badger State during the past week.The latest crop/weather report from the Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service noted that northern areas received up to two inches of snow on Saturday, though it melted off quickly. Frosts and freezes also helped push late-planted corn toward maturity. Topsoil moisture levels were rated five percent very short, 17 percent short, 75 percent adequate and three percent surplus. As of Sunday, about 27 percent of the corn for grain was harvested, about three weeks ahead of last year and five days better than average. The moisture content of corn harvested for grain was reported at 21 percent.
Most of the corn for silage has already been taken off the fields. The state's soybean harvest was 72 percent complete. That was 24 days ahead of the same week in 2019 and 10 days ahead of the five-year average. About 86 percent of the winter wheat has been seeded, with emergence estimated at 65 percent. And fall tillage is also ahead of schedule at 34 percent complete, 27 days ahead of last year and 10 days better than usual for mid-October.
