Wisconsin Farmers Continue to See Great Weather for Field Work

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Wisconsin had 6.3 days suitable for fieldwork last week, making for ideal conditions for farmers to make progress in the fields.The weekly crop report said much of the state saw no precipitation and slightly below normal temperatures. Frosts continued in northern and central Wisconsin with killing frosts reported in some areas, according to the Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service. And corn silage chopping advanced quickly, making up the majority of fieldwork done as of mid-September. Topsoil moisture levels were rated four percent very short, 16 percent short, 77 percent adequate and three percent surplus. As of Sunday, 49 percent of the corn crop was considered mature, which was more than three weeks ahead of last year and nine days better than the five-year average. With 77 percent of the corn rated good to excellent, farmers now have 62 percent of their corn silage chopped, a whooping 28 days ahead of 2019 and 11 days ahead of normal.
All but 10 percent of the soybeans were coloring, about three weeks ahead of last year and eight days ahead of the average. Fifty-six percent of the beans were dropping leaves, 15 days further along than a year earlier and five days ahead usual. Nearly half of the winter wheat is now planted, with 16 percent now emerged. And farmers have 78 percent of their fourth hay crop off the fields, which is also ahead of schedule for the last week of summer.
