Granton Village Board Discusses Speed Signs

Monday, September 14th, 2020 -- 9:12 AM

-The Granton Village Board heard an update on the speeding signs on County Road K.

According to the unofficial minutes from the meeting, several solar, speed limit, sign options were presented to the board. The board reviewed the options and opted to purchase a 2 pack solar sign from Elan City for $6000 that includes the 2 solar systems. They also heard some budget amendments. There was a leak in Well 5 and the village lost 100,000 gallons of water and 10 inches of media. Three valves were replaced to fix the problem and Tonka is preparing a quote for the replacement of the media. The budget will be reviewed and adjusted once the quote is received. The board also heard the President’s Report. He announced that the Fire Department wants to put a dry hydrant in at the park pond for the fire department to utilize the water. The board was reminded that the village pays the water department $37,157 yearly out of the general fund for the fire hydrants in the village.

The fire hydrants are also scheduled to be replaced at a cost of $5,000 per hydrant and will be a costly expense. When the fire department buys water from the village it offsets some of the expenses for the water and sewer department and helps control the rates for village residents. A member of the Fire Department advised that he will always pull water from the pond to put out fires so as not to drain the tower. It was noted that a recent leak drained 100,000 gallons of water from the tower in a 24 hour period without issue and that the hydrants are there for that purpose. The concern noted was the speed at which the water would be removed. It was also noted that this is a recreational pond that is stocked with fish each spring. This will be placed on the agenda in October.
