Chicken Ordinance Gets Plucked Again at Marshfield Common Council Meeting

Wednesday, August 12th, 2020 -- 10:01 AM

(WDLB) -A proposed chicken ordinance for the city of Marshfield has again gone nowhere.

Alderman Tom Buttke had the issue placed on last night's Common Council agenda, after he said "a couple residents" asked about raising chickens in the city. Ordinance Officer Bob Larsen said it's an issue that needs a lot more research. When the Mayor asked for questions from the rest of the Council, there were none, and the discussion ended there. The proposed chicken ordinance has come up before. In 2010, the Sustainable Marshfield Committee presented a proposed ordinance that would have allowed Marshfield residents to have up to four chickens.

The Council rejected that ordinance in 2011 on a vote of 6-3. A request to place the item on a Council agenda in March of last year was ultimately pulled. Wausau, Stevens Point and Wisconsin Rapids already have similar ordinances on the books in those communities. The Marshfield Council also looked at similar ordinances on the books in Neenah and Eau Claire.
