Wisconsin Farm Fields Looking Great

Tuesday, August 11th, 2020 -- 9:04 AM

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -With 6.1 days suitable for fieldwork during the past week, Wisconsin farmers continue to be pleased with how their crops are looking at this stage of the growing season.

The state's agriculture department said in its weekly crop/progress report that scattered showers brought needed moisture to some areas over the weekend, while others saw only trace amounts. Some cover crops were also being planted on cleared fields. Topsoil moisture levels were rated at six percent very short, 18 percent short, 71 percent adequate and five percent surplus. As of Sunday, over a third of the state's corn crop was at dough stage. That's 12 days ahead of last year and four days better than the five-year average. The corn continues to be rated 81 percent good to excellent.

All but six percent of the soybeans were blooming as of the weekend, more than a month ahead of the 2019 season and nine days ahead of average. Seventy-three percent of the beans are setting pods, which is also well beyond normal for this time in August. Farmers now have over half of the oats harvested and 83 percent of the winter wheat off the fields. In the Central Sands region, 10 percent of the potato crop was harvested. And 55 percent of the third hay crop is complete, which is in line with the five-year average.
