Greenwood School Board Approves District's Reopening Plan for New School Year

Thursday, July 30th, 2020 -- 10:09 AM

-The Greenwood School Board held a special meeting on Monday and approved the district’s reopening plan for the new school year.

A couple citizens provided their thoughts to the board before they made their decision. One asked if students will have access to online classes? Another said they would like to see students in school 5 days a week. They are concerned about how working parents can help their kids with virtual school and work. The board then reviewed the parent survey. According to the survey, 77% of parents indicated they are “comfortable with no concerns or comfortable with minimal concerns” about students returning “in-person” in the fall; parents overwhelmingly want traditional “in-person” instruction; and 62% of parents support requiring students to wear masks in areas where the district cannot adequately physically distance. The board then reviewed the staff survey. According to the survey, 46% of staff indicated they are “comfortable with no concerns or comfortable with minimal concerns” about “in-person” in the fall; 41% of staff indicated they are “comfortable with several concerns;” 13% of staff indicated they are “uncomfortable;” 64% of staff selected traditional “in-person” instruction as their first choice; and 36% of staff selected blended/hybrid or virtual instruction as their first choice.

The board then reviewed five instructional options presented by administration. The various options will allow the district to transition from one option to another if conditions warrant. The board then approved the following option to start the school year. 4K-6th will be in person, with appropriate mitigation protocols, Monday-Friday. 7-12 will be an in-person hybrid block, with appropriate mitigation protocols, Monday-Friday. This will be a block schedule with hours 2, 4, 6, 8 meeting on even-numbered days and hours 1, 3, 5, 7 meeting on odd-numbered days. The board also reviewed potential mitigation and safety protocols for reopening and they asked administration to set-up another meeting to further discuss safety protocols and other concerns related to reopening plans.
