UW-System Receives $2 Million From Anonymous Donor for Online Learning

Wednesday, July 29th, 2020 -- 10:18 AM

(AP) -The University of Wisconsin System has received $2 million from an anonymous donor to beef up online learning this semester as schools struggle to reopen amid the coronavirus pandemic, system officials said Monday.

Interim System President Tommy Thompson told reporters during a video conference that he couldn’t say when the system received the money but most of it was handed out to individual schools by July 14. The money will go to train faculty and support staff in how to teach classes online, equip students with laptops, tablets and hot spots and provide professional development courses.

The system shut down in-person classes in March as the pandemic seized the country and finished the spring semester completely online, drawing complaints from some students who said the experience was lacking and they didn’t get the full value of their tuition payments and fees. The system plans to reopen on Sept. 2 with a mix of in-person classes and online courses.
