Wisconsin Crops Couldn't Ask for Better Weather

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Crops responded well to yet another week of hot and muggy weather conditions.The Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service issued its weekly crop/weather report on Monday, which noted that corn and soybeans were moving rapidly through their pollination phases and beginning to make grain. The second cutting of hay was winding down as some farmers were able to start third crop. Topsoil moisture was rated one percent very short, eight percent short, 80 percent adequate and 11 percent surplus. As of Sunday, nearly two-thirds of the corn was silking, 13 days ahead of last year and three days better than the five-year average. Eight percent was in the dough stage, which is also further along than normal. Reporters put the statewide corn condition at 82 percent good to excellent, up slightly from a week earlier.
Eighty-one percent of the soybeans were blooming. That was three full weeks ahead of 2019 levels and eight days ahead of normal. Just over half the beans were setting pods, 17 days ahead of last year and eight days ahead of the five-year average. Most of the oats have now changed color and nine percent has been harvested. Farmers also have 34 percent of the winter wheat through the combines. In the hay fields, 86 percent of the second cutting of alfalfa was complete, which is well ahead of normal. Third cutting was 17 percent harvested and looking 83 percent good to excellent across the state.
