Thursday, July 23rd, 2020 -- 8:10 AM

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Total milk production in America's Dairyland fell during the month of June when compared to the same time last year.

According to the USDA's monthly milk production report, Wisconsin farmers produced 2.55 billion pounds during the month, down 1.4 percent from last June, and less than the 2.57 billion made in May 2020, which had more days on the calendar. It's also the eighth consecutive month of year-to-year lower output. Nationally, 17.4 billion pounds of milk was produced in the 24 major dairy states for the month. That was a slight 0.5 percent increase from 2019, and less than the previous month's 18 billion.

Meanwhile, the number of milk cows on farms in the 24 major states was 8.83 million head, 43,000 head more than June 2019, but 9,000 head less than May 2020. The average number of milk cows on Wisconsin farms for the month was 1.26 million head, unchanged from last month, but down 11,000 from last year. Monthly production per cow averaged 2,030 pounds, which was 10 pounds per cow less than last year's figures.
