Marshfield Coffee Shop Receives 2019 "Best Interior Renovation Project Under $50,000" Award

(Hub City Times) -As Wisconsin celebrated “Main Street Days” in July, downtown Marshfield business Uptown Coffee was recognized with a state renovation award.

Main Street Marshfield surprised the business owners, John and Vicki Tracy, on July 8 with party hats, signs, and bells as they presented them with the 2019 “Best Interior Renovation Project Under $50,000” award. “When a 3,000 square foot antique store closed its doors in this 1887 former hardware store, Chris and Erin Howard saw an opportunity. The building’s main challenge was that the space was too large for most tenants. But the original elements such as tin ceilings, columns, trim, and hardwood floors still remained,” said Main Street Marshfield Executive Director Kaelie Gomez. “They divided the space into two 1,500 square foot spaces which required upgraded HVAC and electrical for each. The rear space was reconfigured to serve both sides with bathrooms, a shared lounge, and an accessible entrance. “They then recruited John and Vicki Tracy of Uptown Coffee into one half and allowed them to do the renovation as long as the original elements remained with their 130-year-old nicks and patina. A vintage clock belonging to Vicki’s family served as inspiration for the midcentury design of everything from their logo and signage to the sputnik chandeliers, espresso bar, lounge chairs, patterned walls, and seating.

“Highlighting the work going into property renovation and new business is a joy. The cost, creativity, drive, and energy to begin a successful food/drink establishment warrants appreciation. Uptown Coffee carefully planned a space with historic preservation in mind and the results are a cafe that’s a true experience.” Co-owner Vicki Tracy thanked family and friends who supported their vision and helped bring the business to life. “John and I were completely surprised and very humbled to receive state recognition for our space,” she said. “We hope to be a part of our community for a long time. An award like this really encourages and inspires us to work harder and to keep bringing the newest and best coffee practices to Marshfield.”
