Another Great Week for Wisconsin Farmers in the Fields

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -The summer weather conditions continued to push crop development to levels not seen in years during the past week in Wisconsin.According to the state's agriculture department, farmers made hay between showers with some already starting to cut second crop. Reporters also noted that the corn was knee- to- waist high in many fields. The weekly crop/progress summary put topsoil moisture conditions at one percent very short, seven percent short, 78 percent adequate and 14 percent surplus. With all of the corn now emerged, reports estimate the crop to be around 78 percent good to excellent statewide. However, that was down two percentage points from a week earlier. Soybeans emergence was 25 days ahead of last year at 97 percent sprouted. That's also a week ahead of the five-year average.
About eight percent of the beans have bloomed as of Sunday. With 63 percent of the oats headed, the crop is five percent colored already. Oat conditions were rated 79 percent good to excellent. Winter wheat was 89 percent headed and 32 percent turning color. And the first cutting of alfalfa was reported as 96 percent complete--16 days ahead of the previous season and four days better than average. Ten percent of the second crop has been mowed, which is slightly behind normal for late June.
