Another Excellent Week in the Fields for Wisconsin Farmers

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2020 -- 9:00 AM

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Crop scouts throughout the Badger State have indicated that last week was ideal for fieldwork.

According to the Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service, the dry, breezy conditions early in the week allowed farmers to chop and bale hay, while the soaking rains over the weekend kept soil moistures adequate. The weekly crop progress report also noted that much of the corn reached knee-high status a little early this year. Topsoil moisture levels were nine percent short, 80 percent adequate and 11 percent surplus. No areas of the state were considered very short. As of Sunday, about 80 percent of the corn and soybean crops were said to be in good to excellent condition. Emergence for both crops are also about three weeks ahead of last year, where wet weather delayed most fieldwork.

About 40 percent of the oats have headed. That was 11 days ahead of last year and equal to the five-year average. Two percent of the crop is coloring and 81 percent of all oat fields are rated good to excellent. Winter wheat turning color was 13 percent, a week ahead of last year, but two days behind the average. And 92 percent of the first hay crop has already been cut--16 days ahead of the past growing season and nearly a week further along than normal.
