Sunday, June 21st, 2020 -- 7:22 AM

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Wisconsin's year-to-year milk production has yet to exceed 2019 levels so far this year.

According to the USDA's monthly milk production report, output totaled 2.57 billion pounds during the month of May, about 3.1 percent lower than last year, but higher than the 2.54 billion made in April 2020 (which had less days on the calendar). Nationally, 18 billion pounds of milk was produced in the 24 major dairy states for the month. That was a 1.0 percent decrease from 2019, and less than the previous month's 17.8 billion. Meanwhile, the number of milk cows on farms in the 24 major states was 8.84 million head, 50,000 head more than May 2019, but 12,000 head less than April 2020.

The average number of milk cows on Wisconsin farms for the month was 1.26 million head, was the same as last month but down 12,000 from last year. Monthly production per cow averaged 2,050 pounds, which was 45 pounds per cow less than last year's figures.
