April 2020 USDA Milk Production Report

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -After seeing year-to-year declines for the past several months, Wisconsin milk production finally stabilized in April when compared to 2019.

According to the USDA's monthly milk production report, output totaled 2.54 billion pounds during the month, unchanged from April 2019, but lower than the 2.6 billion made in March 2020, which had more days on the calendar. Nationally, 17.8 billion pounds of milk was produced in the 24 major dairy states for the month. That was a 1.6 percent increase over 2019, but less than the previous month's 18.3 billion.

Meanwhile, the number of milk cows on farms in the 24 major states was 8.85 million head, 65,000 head more than April 2019, but 4,000 head less than March 2020. The number of milk cows on Wisconsin farms for the month was 1.26 million head, was the same as last month but down 9,000 from last year. Monthly production per cow averaged 2,015 pounds, which was 15 pounds per cow more than last year's figures.
