Motorists Reminded Deer Collisions Are More Likely In The Coming Weeks

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Two state agencies are reminding motorists that deer activity increases this time of year as does the search for places to give birth and young deer separate from their mothers.The Departments of Natural Resources and Transportation say with this increased activity, drivers may encounter more deer darting into the paths of their vehicles without warning. Although motor vehicle collisions with deer peak in the fall months, May and June is one of the worst months for driver and passenger injuries due to deer crashes.
"The best thing motorists can do to protect themselves and avoid hitting a deer is buckle up, slow down and scan the road ahead carefully," said David Pabst, director of WisDOT's Bureau of Transportation Safety. Law enforcement agencies reported over 18,400 deer vs. motor vehicle crashes last year. Dane County had the most motor vehicle crashes reported in 2019 with 859.
