LOCAL AARP TO HOLD PROGRAM FOR OLDER DRIVERS

Monday, August 29th, 2005 -- 11:03 AM

Older drivers are being encouraged to attend the AARP?s Safe Driving Program. Merle Bartsch of Granton has volunteered to organize the course, which will be held October 18th and 19th from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the St. Mary?s Catholic Church basement.

Bartsch says many insurance companies offer auto insurance discounts for those that take the class. The course reminds drivers over 55-year old that they face unique challenges.

"We don't react as quickly as I used to, we don't see as clearly as we used, our depth-perception isn't what it used to be and sometimes we forget what colors the signs are," Bartsch explains. "It's more or less to remind of what we already know."

"Data from insurance companies has proven that folks that take this course become safer drivers. They have fewer accidents and fewer violations."

The course was a big hit last year with 17 people attending. The course costs $10 and organizers would like people to pre-register. To do so, you may call Greta Ross at 743-2613.
