Ag Economist Sees Reasons for Optimism Moving Forward

Friday, May 15th, 2020 -- 9:13 AM

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -After two consecutive days of limits-up in the dairy markets, Dan Basse says producers have some reasons to be optimistic going into the summer months despite a very turbulent March and April.

During Thursday's Dairy Signal program, the ag economist told members of the Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin that the food service sector is starting to pick up as states reopen their economies and as foreign buyers begin to open their checkbooks. Specifically, the milk market is being driven by increased restaurant traffic, coupled with recent government purchases by the USDA.

And he's also encouraged by news that the Chinese are making arrangements to buy more products. However, Basse doesn't look for everything to reset overnight. He feels that until there is a vaccine on the market for the coronavirus, the road to recovery will be slow.
