Wisconsin Ag Department and Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin Announce State Milk Assessment Will Be Lifted for Disposed Milk

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture and Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin announced that the state milk assessment will be lifted for disposed milk during the COVID-19 public health emergency. The change will be in effect from May 14, 2020 until the end of the federal major disaster declaration made by President Trump in April. DATCP Interim Secretary Randy Romanski notes that the order is not retroactive, so it does not apply to milk that has already been disposed of before May 14. DFW CEO Chad Vincent added that the state's milk marketing board is aware COVID-19 has made challenging times even tougher for many of Wisconsin's dairy farmers.
All dairy producers in the state pay 10-cents per hundredweight toward the dairy check-off, which DFW manages and uses for research and promotion for the industry. Earlier this spring, a number of larger dairy farms were asked to dispose their milk because their local processors did not have enough room to store it.
