Wisconsin Farmers Making Great Progress in the Fields

Tuesday, May 12th, 2020 -- 9:11 AM

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -With more than six days suitable for fieldwork, spring planting progressed nicely last week thanks to more dry and sunny weather.

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture's weekly crop report stated that spring tillage and manure spreading continued in full force, while planting progress on small grains, corn, soybeans and potatoes surpassed normal levels for this time of the year. Topsoil moisture condition were rated three percent very short, 13 percent short, 76 percent adequate and eight percent surplus. Corn planting reached 59 percent complete. That's over three weeks better than last year and a full week ahead of the five-year average.

About three percent of the corn has already emerged as of Sunday. More than a third of the soybean are now in the ground, 24 days ahead of the 2019 crop year and nine days ahead of average. Farmers have 74 percent of their oats planted, with 36 percent emerged. And winter wheat was rated 68 percent good to excellent condition statewide, up three percentage points from last week.
