Marshfield School Board Relaxes Graduation Requirements

(Hub City Times) -The Marshfield School District is relaxing graduation requirements for seniors for the current academic year.The Board of Education voted unanimously on April 29 in favor of modifying the district’s standard graduation requirement of 25 credits down to the statewide benchmark of 15. Superintendent Dr. Ryan Christianson said the state requires a minimum of 15 credits plus a civics exam, but strongly encourages local districts to add at least an additional 8.5 credits. The School District of Marshfield goes with 10, for a total of 25. With the reduction in requirements, Marshfield High School Principal Mike Nicksic said most of this year’s seniors already have enough credits to graduate. For those students who don’t meet the required 15 credits by their last day of May 27, Christianson said there will be opportunities in summer school to get caught up. Christianson said school officials do have specific dates in mind for an in-person graduation ceremony, a senior prom and perhaps even “Project Graduation”. But with the ever-changing “Safer at Home” order, he said nothing is concrete just yet.
In the meantime, Nicksic said the high school staff is in the process of working out when and how to collect musical instruments and iPads, while also trying to distribute graduation cap and gown packages and items that were left in lockers. Christianson added that the spring musical will likely be made up in September, but no specific dates have been mentioned just yet. The remainder of the current school year was officially cancelled last week when Governor Tony Evers extended his “Safer at Home” order to May 26. But in Christianson’s words, “Do the best you can with the circumstances that have been dealt.” Christianson added that he’s very proud of the Marshfield community and families for holding up against very difficult and challenging circumstances.
