Marshfield Mayor Vetoes Common Council Action to Resume Meetings

Friday, April 17th, 2020 -- 10:26 AM

(WDLB) -City government meetings in Marshfield won’t continue after all.

Mayor Bob McManus Thursday vetoed Tuesday’s Common Council action to resume city meetings. The Mayor issued his veto just hours before Governor Evers extended his statewide “Safer At Home” order by one month, but says it does fall in line with such a directive. When the Council does meet on the 28th, City Administrator Steve Barg said that would be an opportunity for aldermen to override the Mayor’s veto if they so choose. Tuesday’s meeting was conducted using Zoom video conferencing, with Mayor Bob McManus and Aldermen Tom Witzel and Chris Jockheck in the council chambers at City Hall, while the remainder of the council members checked in from their homes and city department heads logged in from their offices. The meeting was the first for city government since March 19.

Meanwhile, two new Aldermen will get sworn in next Tuesday, when the Common Council holds its annual reorganizational meeting following the spring election. Quentin Rosandich will fill the District Three seat vacated by Chris Jockheck, while former District Five Alderman Ed Wagner returns to that seat after a two-year hiatus. He’ll replace Steve MacSwain, who is stepping down after one term. Mayor McManus will also get sworn in for a second two-year term, after running unopposed. Two years ago, McManus defeated Alderman Tom Witzel in the race to replace former Mayor Chris Meyer. Also reelected were Aldermen Mike Feirer, Adam Fischer and Tom Buttke.
