Some Farmers Able to Do Field Work Before Easter Snow Storm

Tuesday, April 14th, 2020 -- 9:31 AM

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Prior to the Easter weekend snow storm, some farmers were able to take advantage of last week's warmer weather to get their tillage equipment out of the shed and into the fields.

The Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service noted in its second weekly crop/weather summary of the year that many fields remained too wet to work, but some farmers were successful in manure and fertilizer applications. Spring tillage, oat and potato plantings were also starting to take off on well-drained soils. The report indicated that topsoil moisture conditions were rated one percent short, 70 percent adequate and 29 percent surplus.

As of Sunday, spring tillage was seven percent complete statewide, a week ahead of last year and four days ahead of average. About nine percent of the oats have been seeded, which is also in line with most normal years. Reporters say 60 percent of the winter wheat crop was rated in good to excellent condition.
