Wisconsin Congressman Asking Federal Government to Help Farmers with Land Rent
Tuesday, April 7th, 2020 -- 9:30 AM
(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -As many lawmakers and farm groups are asking the USDA to help struggling dairy farmers by purchasing surplus products, one Wisconsin congressman is also urging the federal government to help producers cover the cost of land rent.In a letter to Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin on Monday, Rep. Ron Kind of La Crosse asked for immediate clarity for farmers' eligibility for the paycheck protection program. PPP was created as part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, which was signed by the President in late March.
Kind says nearly 40 percent of the nation's farmland is rented. Without immediate assistance, he feels small farmers who rent land to farm may be forced to end production.
