1897 JAIL MUSEUM DISPLAY TELLS STORIES OF 'CENTURY FARMS'

Wednesday, July 20th, 2005 -- 3:21 PM

A new display at the 1897 Clark County Jail Museum tells the story of some of the oldest farms in the county. Sue Krueger was one of the organizers of the Century Farm Display, she says there are over 80 registered ?Century Farms? in Clark County; a Century Farm is a farm that has been in operation in the same family for over 100 years.

"Some brought in storyboards already made up, others just brought in pictures and other materials we could use," Krueger says, "We have 19 farms promised; there are 18 farms actually there."

Krueger said they learned a lot about the hardships of starting a farm in Clark County. People may forget this area was forestland before the lumbers settled it.

"Some of them were employed by lumber companies. As they didn't need the lumber anymore they sold the parcels of land to the people who helped for a very small amount of money. That's how many of them got started," Krueger explains.

While much of the display is a written history of the farms, there are also some artifacts that visitors can view. The 1897 Jail Museum is open Sunday afternoons from 1-4 p.m.
