PETERSON CASE CRAWLS FORWARD

Friday, July 15th, 2005 -- 12:14 PM

In the case of Daniel Peterson, any movement is good movement.

Peterson is accused of stabbing his wife Vicki to death last year on New Year?s Eve at the couple?s Ayers Street home here in Neillsville. He?s also charged in Illinois with attempting to kill a police officer and rob a bank at knifepoint.

As we?ve reported, his case in Illinois has been dragging on and on.

The biggest culprit is the defense?s delays in producing their expert?s report on Peterson?s ?fitness? to stand trial. That report has now been filed and - as expected ? it finds Peterson not fit to stand trial.

Clark County District Attorney Darwin Zwieg has petitioned Clark County?s Circuit Court to release the defense report to the victims family. In the petition, Zwieg states he believes the family has a right to see the report, as it will have an impact on the case here in Clark County.

As for the Illinois case, the prosecution will file their findings on Peterson?s competency by July 21. A grand jury has already found probable cause, so the case should be relatively close to going to trial.
