USDA February 2020 Milk Production Report
Sunday, March 22nd, 2020 -- 8:58 AM
(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Wisconsin milk production was up during February when compared to a year earlier, partially due to the extra leap day on the calendar.According to the USDA's monthly milk production report, farmers produced 2.42 billion pounds during the month, up 2.7 percent from February 2019, but lower than January's 2.58 billion pounds. However, if the extra day were taking out of the equation, production would actually be one percent less. Nationally, 17 billion pounds of milk was produced in the 24 major dairy states for the month. That was a 5.6 percent increase over 2019, and less than the previous month's 17.9 billion.
Meanwhile, the number of milk cows on farms in the 24 major states was 8.84 million head, 39,000 head more than February 2019, and 8,000 head more than January 2020. The average number of milk cows on Wisconsin farms for the month was 1.26 million head, which was the same as last month, but 10,000 fewer than last year. Monthly production per cow averaged 1,925 pounds, which was 65 pounds per cow more than last year's figures.
