Granton Village Board Denies Garage Request

Sunday, March 22nd, 2020 -- 8:59 AM

The Granton Village Board discussed a resident’s request to place a garage on village property at their meeting on Tuesday.

According to the unofficial minutes from the meeting, a village resident advised he would like to move a garage he recently purchased next the his house. The garage would cover a portion of the Village property. The property between Village Hall and the resident’s house has a sewer drainage beneath it and is currently used for snow removal. The resident advised he would place the garage on skids so the garage could be removed if the village needed to access the sewer drains. The village would need to move snow to a different location. The resident suggested the village may benefit with an increased tax base. Village property is not taxed and the board will not sell the right of way, so taxes would not be affected. The village president looked at the location, but the proposed garage placement was not marked. There was also question about legalities, insurance, etc. The board discussed the proposal but could not find a solution that would work so the request was denied.

The village president also provided an update. He attended the school board meeting and they’re working directly to formulate a plan for the Community Library. At this time, the school has set up a breakfast and lunch delivery to the students. The library will reach out to the students on the bus routes to provide books and book return options during the health crisis. Although the library is officially closed, it is available by appointment during the following times: Monday and Friday 12:00pm to 4:00pm and Wednesday 8am to 12pm. Call the library at 715-238-5250 to set up an appointment. In an effort to continue to serve the community, the Village offices will remain open and business as usual. They will be diligent about practicing safe distancing, sanitizing, hand washing and require employees with symptoms to self quarantine.
