Senator Johnson Wary of Coronavirus Bill

Wednesday, March 18th, 2020 -- 10:07 AM

(WRN) -Wisconsin Senator Ron Johsnons says he's got some issues in a coronavirus relief bill brokered by the White House and House Democrats.

Wisconsin Senator Ron Johsnons says he's got some issues in a coronavirus relief bill brokered by the White House and House Democrats. Johnson says he'd rather see payments come from the unemployment funds from individual states, rather than creating new sick leave laws.

"It makes a lot more sense to have this money just flow directly to people who are temporarily idled, and I don't want to incentivise people who don't have to take off to take off. We need workers to continue to work in our economy."

Johnson says provisions to expand the amount of time off people can take from their jobs do not meet Republican standards.

"Mandatory sick leave and mandatory family paid leave, the way it's supposedly going to be paid for by the federal government is just the wrong way to go about doing this."

Johnson says he wants to see more in the bill to keep businesses afloat.

"Let's tack on the liquidity measures. We do need to get cash in the hands of successful businesses. We need to be a little careful of just throwing cash at the problem."

He says that as it stands, there's enough funding in individual state's unemployment funds to cover the costs of people who are out of work temporarily.
