With Opener of Fishing Right Around the Corner, DNR Asks Anglers to Brush Up on New Rules

Monday, March 16th, 2020 -- 9:28 AM

(WRN) -It's getting close to the opening of the fishing season, and the Department of Natural Resources is reminding anglers to brush up on new rules for 20-20.

The opening of the fishing season is closing in and the Department of Natural Resources is reminding anglers of some of the changes to the regulations. Fisheries Management specialist Meredith Penthorn says the state is cutting back on how much cisco and whitefish you can harvest per day.

"Cisco and whitefish populations could experience excessive harvest pressure in those areas if those bag limits are not changed a bit to keep pace with how the populations are doing."

Penthorn says the D N R is pushing back the end of musky season to December 31st or first ice, whichever comes first.

"This should open some additional opportunities for musky anglers to get out there and catch additional muskies."

Penthorn says Michigan has decided to open up their season a little earlier, but Wisconsin has not.

"The Michigan side will have an early catch and release season, but Wisconsin is not going to be doing that, so the seas on on the Wisconsin side of the Wisconsin-Michigan Boundary Waters will run from June first to December 31 on open water."

You can get a copy of the complete regulations wherever you buy your license, or online at D N R dot W I dot Gov.
