Local Girl Scout Talks Cookie Sales

Friday, March 13th, 2020 -- 1:08 PM

-For some people, it’s the most wonderful time of year.

And no, I’m not talking about a holiday or March Madness. It’s Girl Scout Cookie season! I spoke with Neillsville Girl Scout Karcyn Schmitz, a 6th grader who’s been in Girl Scouts since she was a kindergartner, about cookie selling time. Fittingly enough, Karcyn came in to talk to me on “Share the Girl Scout Message” Day as the Girl Scouts celebrated their 108th birthday on Thursday. First, Karcyn talked about some of the things she’s done over the years being in Girl Scouts.

“I’ve gone to Girl Scout Camp and a Girl Scout Convention at a science museum. And for selling cookies, I’m going to a convention in Orlando, Florida.”

If Karcyn sells enough cookies, she gets to head to another camp in Florida.

“I have to sell 2,300 boxes of cookies.”

Karcyn said she’s about half way to her goal so far this year. She also said she doesn’t have any special tricks to selling cookies, but she does have one way to stay organized.

“Not really, but I keep my sheets from previous years, so I know who to stop by.”

So, if you bought from Karcyn, you’re on her list! Selling the cookies helps the Girl Scouts with goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics. In selling the cookies, the Girl Scouts also made some donations with the money they raised.

“For our cookie dough that we get from selling cookies, we used that money and bought frosting and cake mix and other stuff for a birthday party and then we put it all in a bag and donated it to the food pantry. And this year we’re going to donate to the splash pad and the Clark County Humane Society.”

Karcyn also talked about why girls should join the Girl Scouts.

“It boosted my self confidence. And it’s a lot of fun...especially Girl Scout Camp! Last year, me and one of my friends did night ninjas and we got to raid the kitchen! Then we went on a night hike and we were all blind folded and we had to hang on to a rope while we were walking through the woods. It was a lot of fun!”

If you haven’t had an opportunity to buy some Girl Scout Cookies yet, Karcyn says you should buy from her! And you can do that by calling 715-937-2969.
