Senator Baldwin Asks U.S. Ag Secretary to Help Wisconsin Dairy Farmers

Friday, March 13th, 2020 -- 10:39 AM

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin is asking U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue to take immediate action to bring relief to struggling dairy farmers, specifically those in Wisconsin.

In a letter to the USDA chief this week, Baldwin stressed that multiple state dairy farms go out of business every day and that Wisconsin leads the nation in farm bankruptcies. "Wisconsin farmers are the backbone of our rural economy, but right now they are facing a storm of challenges and President Trump's trade wars have hurt, not helped, our farmers," Sen. Baldwin said. "This administration needs to do better for family farmers in Wisconsin and I look forward to the opportunity to speak directly to Secretary Perdue about the steps President Trump needs to take right now on behalf of our farmers and our agriculture economy."

The Madison Democrat also asked the agency to to reverse budget cuts proposed in the president's FY21 budget and work with her to increase federal funding for programs that support the agricultural economy. Baldwin is a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee.
