Bill Requiring Schools to Teach About the Holocaust Gets a Hearing

Friday, March 13th, 2020 -- 7:42 AM

(WRN) -A bill that would require schools to teach about the Holocaust and other genocides got a hearing at the state Senate's education committee.

A bill that would require schools to teach about the Holocaust and other genocides got a hearing at the state Senate's education committee. Milwaukee Jewish Federation chair Moshe Katz says that if students don't know about these tragedies, it makes it hard to understand what hatred can do to a society.

"As a teacher, I've seen what the impact of information of knowledge and learning can be. I've seen through learnings of the Shoah and the Holocaust, I've witnessed the reactions at the Holocaust Memorial in Washington DC. I've seen what happens to people at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem."

Katz says the way to stop these sorts of atrocities from happening again is to educate and inform students.

"We as a society, we as a state, cannot trust our future without real knowledge of our past."

Katz says this bill will ensure that Wisconsin students will learn what hatred can do to society as a whole, and why there's a need for empathy for others.

"Remember the past, live the present, and trust the future. Vote yes on SB-744."

The bill would apply to public schools and private schools taking choice vouchers. The bill was already approved by the Assembly.
