Governor Evers Signs Bill Creating New Courts, Clark County in Consideration

Friday, March 6th, 2020 -- 11:52 AM

(WRN) -With Wisconsin's 3rd district court of appeals as the backdrop, Governor Tony Evers signed a bill creating twelve new state circuit courts.

Evers says it will help the wheels of justice turn a little faster.

"Many of you know that our courts and our legal systems across the state are stretched thin, to stay the least, trying to meet the needs of their communities. They're doing the best job they can, but we have to continue to invest in the folks that keep our justice system just."

Evers says it will also help areas make investments in rehab courts that have been so successful elsewhere.

"We also know that communities across our state are struggling with impacts of the substance use disorders and that includes the impact on the legal and criminal justice system. This bill is another step in tackling this issue and helping folks get the treatment and the services they need."

He says the bill passed with bipartisan support because Wisconsin courts have been doing more with less.

"It was a strong bipartisan effort that brought this bill to my desk. And I want to thank the many folks that have pushed to get this done."

The 12 courts will come online over the next three years, four at a time. The location of the courts hasn't been determined but many will be in northern Wisconsin. However, Clark and Jackson Counties are on the list of counties that have asked for more courts and are under consideration.
