La Crosse Elementary Students Champion Spring Peepers as New State Amphibian

Thursday, March 5th, 2020 -- 7:45 AM

(WRN) -A group of La Crosse area elementary students want to make the Spring Peeper the state amphibian.

Peepers are a frog that lives in wetlands and they make a distinctive peeping sound, hence the name. Senator Janet Bewley says it's a great idea.

"For many people in the north, there are other things, but spring peepers are an amazing introduction, not only to spring, but to the beautiful wilderness that we have."

Students from the Summit Environmental School in La Crosse made their pitch to the state assembly's committee on state affairs on Wednesday.

"Spring peepers make an unusual sound while mating, and it's a sign that spring is here." "Spring peepers are very common and widespread around our state. They are found in all 72 counties in Wisconsin."

Students from the Summit Environmental School in La Crosse gave the Assembly Committee on State Affair a lesson in why peepers would make a great state amphibian.

"Spring peepers survive the cold, harsh, cold Wisconsin winters, because their blood has special sugars that act like an antifreeze to keep them alive."

Committee chair Rob Swearingen thanked the students for their presentation, and said the committee will take the request under advisement.
