Governor Evers Signs Ag Bills

Wednesday, March 4th, 2020 -- 8:36 AM

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Wisconsin farm groups praised Governor Tony Evers on Tuesday after he signed a plethora of bills into law, including several measure that benefit the state's agricultural sector.

One of the bills adjusts the formula used to calculate the manufacturing and agricultural tax credit so that farmers can claim the full credit even though they receive federal crop insurance for harvest loss. Without the change, farmers who lost revenue because of crop damage also had to pay more in taxes, according to the Dairy Business Association. Another proposal establishes a system for buying and selling nutrient credits, in which those who hold a water pollution discharge elimination permit including will be eligible to participate in the nutrient credit trading system. Wisconsin Farm Bureau President Joe Bragger says it helps bring farmers into the discussion about water quality.

Also signed into law were Senate Bill 685, which removes the requirement for annual documentation verifying non-use of synthetic bovine growth hormone; and SB 523 exempts farmers, family members or employees of the farm from needing a commercial drivers license to operate a commercial motor vehicle that transports agricultural products, machinery or supplies. In all, Evers signed 60 bills on Tuesday, ranging from bills that clarify the reimbursement of certain patient-incurred expenses in cancer trials to new requirements for the Department of Natural Resources to create a Lyme disease awareness campaign.
