State Department of Health Services Says the Coronavirus a Concern, But the Flu Their Main Focus Right Now

Thursday, February 27th, 2020 -- 9:40 AM

(WRN) -State health officials are waiting for a return on tests to see if another person has contracted COVID-19 or the coronavirus.

Department of Health Service chief medical officer Ryan Wesergaard says if you've got any respiratory illness right now, don't risk it and take care of yourself.

"Staying home when you're sick, having people who are close to you wash hands, clean surfaces, all of those are really standard."

Wesergaard says that while COVID-19 is still a concern that the state is preparing for, influenza remains in the front of their responses right now.

"We have an influenza epidemic which seems to still have not yet peaked. We think in the next coming weeks it might really reach its peak."

Division of Public Health Deputy Administrator Chuck Warzecha says they're hoping to boost the number of flu vaccinations, even this late into the season.

"To the extent that people are people are able to, and do avail themselves of getting the flu shot, you're also helping your community and taking some of the burden off the healthcare system."

Over 23-hundred people have been hospitalized by the flu in Wisconsin this season. Only one person has tested positive for COVID-19 in the state at this point.
