Unlikely Roadblock Causes Colby Cheese Bill to Fall in Legislative Limbo

Monday, February 24th, 2020 -- 1:06 PM

-An unlikely roadblock has put the Colby Cheese bill into legislative limbo at the state capitol.

Recently, residents of Colby have been trying to convince state representatives and senators to approve a bill that would designate Colby Cheese as Wisconsin’s State Cheese. Unfortunately, like with many things these days, partisan politics got in the way. When the bill was first being proposed, it had its fair share of supporters in Madison, but there were also many who stated they couldn’t support the bill. According to one representative, who wished to remain anonymous, they received resistance from members of a powerful cheese lobbying group in the state. Members of this group stated that designating Colby cheese as Wisconsin’s State Cheese put an unfair emphasis on Colby Cheese, the city of Colby and it would make it harder to sell other types of cheese like mozzarella and cheddar.

However, those two cheeses in particular, which were continuously brought up, have no origins in Wisconsin or even the country. Colby cheese is one of the only cheeses that originated right here in American and right here in Wisconsin. Members of this cheese lobbying group had voted to leave the effort alone at a recent meeting, but, according to some lawmakers, there was still resistance. For now, there’s no word on the future of the Colby Cheese Bill.
