Total Number of Wisconsin Farms Actually Rose in 2019

Monday, February 24th, 2020 -- 10:41 AM

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Despite having less dairy herds, the total number of all farms in Wisconsin during 2019 actually rose last year to 64,900.

That was up by 100, according to newly released figures from the USDA. By the numbers, Wisconsin had 29,000 operations in the $1,000-$9,999 sales range this past year, which was up 200 compared to 2018. But the largest of the farm categories, operations that did over a million dollars in business, went down slightly at 2,050. That was 100 less than last year's summary. Total land on farms in the Badger State was 14.3 million acres, which was consistent with the previous year. Wisconsin's average farm size was 220 acres, down one acre from 2018.

The average farm size for those in the $1,000,000 and over economic sales class was just over 1,700 acres. Meanwhile, the number of farms in the United States for 2019 is estimated at 2.02 million, down by 5,800 from 2017. Total land on farms, at 897 million acres, decreased by about 2.1 million acres from the prior year. The average farm size in the U.S. is 444 acres, up slightly from 12 months earlier.
